When is Rakhi?
The fascinating festival of Raksha
Bandhan that celebrates the beautiful bond between brothers and sisters
is celebrated on the full moon day in auspicious month of Shravana or
Savana. Shravana is the fifth month of Hindu Calendar and it corresponds
to the month of July - August according to English Calendar Year.
The month of Shravana is considered to be extremely propitious for
Pujas and worships by Hindus. As the festival of Rakhi falls on the
bright full moon day, it is also called Rakhi Purnima.
This day is considered most auspicious of all and is celebrated by
Hindus all over the country as Rakhi Purnima, 'Shravani
Poornima' or 'Naarli Poornima'. The customs traditions and reasons
of celebration vary in different regions due to cultural differences.
On the day of Raksha Bandhan sisters tie a sacred thread called Rakhi
on brothers wrist and pray for their long and happy life. Brothers
bless their sisters and promise to protect them always. Exchange of
Rakhi gifts and sweets makes the festival a joyful and memorable family
event.
